So my trip to Calgary was a resounding success…made some good dough DJing, spent it all on booze and taxis. No regrets! On Friday night I went down to CJSW’s brand new studio to drop some tunes on What Would The Neighbours Think. I didn’t realize they were recording the set, but here it is!

I’m coming back to Alberta for Easter weekend, now that winter has pretty much ended. I had the good fortune of being invited to come play records in 3 different venues while I’m there- come say hi.

April 1 - Around The Way @ Bamboo, with GSD & The Fly Girls. Gonna be playing funk, hip hop, disco and house to set off the long weekend right. No cover! Babes!

April 2 - CJSW Radio Calgary, special guest 10-11pm local time- I’m stoked for this, Friday nights on CJSW were a huge part of my musical education as a teenager. My friend Shannon got this sweet timeslot recently and invited me to come play some dance music. You can stream it on http://www.cjsw.com if you’re out of radio range…

April 2 - Modern Math @ Lord Nelson’s. Dan Solo and Mr. Geography have been bringing in huge dubstep/bass music guests to their weekly night for a while now, but this will be my first chance to check it out. Going to be laying down some dubs that I don’t get to air out much.

Featuring:

DEEPS - Nelson BC - pK / Integrated Grime Unit / AreaONE / GutterFunkRecords
(dubstep/glitchhop/dnb/breaks/4×4wobblers)

Growing up on the west coast, and now residing in the Kootenay Mountains, this self professed “BASStard” took to the decks during some time spent in southern Alberta, and instantly joined forces with Calgary’s legendary pK crew. Since then he has also been enlisted by VanCity’s Integrated Grime Unit, and Cranbrooks AreaONE crews of misfits to routinely wreck shop, and with a love for all beats bass heavy & broken, has been slamming dancefloor after dancefloor across western Canada, destroying clubs, pubs, and halls up to the infamous Shambhala Music Festival, playing alongside some of the games biggest heavyweights including: Bassnectar, the Glitch Mob, Ed Rush & Optical, Evol Intent, Rusko,Soteg, ill.Gates, Subvert & Excision. You can catch him across western Canada rockin dancefloors with his own edits/remixes, as well as fresh unreleased bangers from around the globe and his crew. Never restricted by pesky bpm’s or genres,
Deeps’ main vein is what PK and I.G.U. djs are known for: BIG BAD BASS!!! His mixes “Steady Rollin” and “Beaver Bass” each have over 10,000 downloads on itunes and groovecast canada. Don’t miss this Victoria debut!!!

THE FUNK HUNTERS - Vancouver - Funk/Breaks/Party-Hop

Recognizing the need to bring more F-U-N-K to your speakers, DUNKS & OUTLIER have teamed up for a global mission hunting the freshest party rocking sounds imaginable. Armed with 4 turntables and an arsenal of phat beats, the FUNK HUNTERS have been infecting dancefloors across BC with their own signature blend of booty-shaking party-hop. Following appearances throughout Vancouver and the infamous MOO CREW parties at Shambhala, the pair finally made their first Victoria appearance at last year’s annual Halloween throwdown at the legendary Phantom Pharm and returned again this spring for an epic 4hr beach-set of funky breaks and bass heavy bangers at a rare Mile Zero party. Word on the street is that their funk is fresher than ever and these two are sure to have something special planned for their debut appearance at the Sunset Room!

Check out DUNKS beats and mixtapes at: http://www.myspace.com/dunksfunk
And download OUTLIER’s new mix “The Funk Arrival” at: http://soundcloud.com/outliedfunk/the-funk-arrival-1

DJ Emmett - Homebreakin Records
Emmett’s been digging in record crates since he was a wee lad, and this comes through in his eclectic sets of house, electro, breaks, and dusty funk classics. Playing in clubs since he was underage has given Emmett a long list of gigs opening for big-time jocks like Doc Martin, John Selway, Brett Johnson, Tipper, and many more. This summer will mark Emmett’s debut appearance at Soundwave and after his opening gigs for Mat the Alien, Fort Knox 5, and Soul of Man earlier this year you’re not going to want to miss this chance to see him in action before the festivities begin in July.

mr.b - pK / Deep Down Productions

mr.b’s uncompromising blend of house with jazz and funk influences has grabbed the attention of Victoria’s maturing nightlife. Not stuck in the current trend of knocking out electro bangers, mr.b’s tight mixing and exceptional track selection has made him a unique figure in Victoria’s electronic scene and a purveyor of PK style bass heavy beats. With over 8 years of experience mr.b’s style is firmly rooted in the past while keeping a keen eye on future. You can catch him getting “kinda groovy” at Whitebird on Saturday evenings and look out for his Sunday afternoon set in the Village at Shambhala ‘09.

After a blissful year off, I’m back in university and feeling the pressure with exams starting in 2 days. Some of you might be in my position, so I wanted to post a couple mixes that have really fit the mood I’m in. The “best of Young Jeezy” mix by DJ Ayres is an excellent compilation of hustle anthems. I admit I got a little inspired by dude’s rhymes today- get money, stay focused, laugh about your success. Exactly what I needed to hear. The Flying Lotus essential mix is a bunch of abstract hip hop, jazz, dubstep, etc. with a chilled-out Cali vibe.
