Don’t Stop [new mix]

After a summer in Berlin I felt the urge to record a new mix…something that reflected the way people enjoy dance music over there. No licenses, no closing times, complete freedom. The music just keeps going: rhythmic, layered, and hypnotic. Deep house and techno.

Summer News

The sun is going down and I’m sitting outside on my patio in Vancouver…how are you guys doing?

Yeah, I’ve moved across the water for the summer. The refugees from Calgary keep piling up here, as fellow Homebreaker Neighbour is actually moving out this week too.

The Soundwave lineup is partially posted at http://soundwavemusicfestival.ca/music -Neighbour and I are on the lineup this year, as well as Greenskeepers, Noze f. Dani Siciliano, Dieselboy, Dirt Crew, Mat the Alien…. that festival was a highlight of my summer last year, the beach is a really incredible spot. Book July 10-12 off work.

Coming very soon: full flyer for Deep Down’s next Victoria party, June 12! Dubstep, breaks, house, and funk.

GZA & Talib Kweli in Victoria

I was more than a little surprised to hear that two major hip hop lyricists were coming through the provicial capital on back-to-back nights. I’m definitely going to check out the Genius, dunno about Kweli.

Sunday March 22: Talib Kweli @ Element

Monday March 23: GZA @ Sugar

Crunch time

After a blissful year off, I’m back in university and feeling the pressure with exams starting in 2 days. Some of you might be in my position, so I wanted to post a couple mixes that have really fit the mood I’m in. The “best of Young Jeezy” mix by DJ Ayres is an excellent compilation of hustle anthems. I admit I got a little inspired by dude’s rhymes today- get money, stay focused, laugh about your success. Exactly what I needed to hear.  The Flying Lotus essential mix is a bunch of abstract hip hop, jazz, dubstep, etc. with a chilled-out Cali vibe.

Siriusmo

One of my favourite producers Siriusmo has a remix of Housemeister up on Palms Out Sounds. Go download! And then buy some of Siriusmo’s tracks on Beatport. So, so good.

That street shot at the linked page is at one of my favourite corners in Berlin…home of Burgermeister (if you know, consider yourself lucky).

Francois K live at Minitek

Hooooooly shit.

Shambhala 2008

Whew.

Just got back from the mountains of central BC, where thousands of people descend on a dusty ranch for their annual dose of madness. I gotta give a shoutout to my boys from Homebreakin, who got me in at the absolute last minute in exchange for working the booth… the HBR takeover was in full effect this year. Big shit poppin.

Highlights of the weekend-
-DJ Nu Mark absolutely destroying the Village with a flawless evening set of funk, hip hop, and random club tunes. When you’ve got the dudes from The Rub and Smalltown DJ’s rocking out, you’re doing something right.
-the Lawnchair Generals playing a superb house & acid set as the thunderstorms started on friday night.
-Mat the Alien making jaws drop in the Rock Pit on thursday, dude is unreal.
-Fatty Fresh Burritos (an annual tradition).

This dude Robb that I was camped with took hundreds of good pictures, which I’ll put up (with his permission) hopefully by the end of this week. This was my fourth or fifth time at the festival, and honestly I think it was my favourite.

Busta Rhymes vs. Dead Prez - I Got Bass

Is everything Bangladesh produces going to be this good? “A Milli,” then this… Busta is probably the most underrated MC around right now, it’s good to see him making hits again. The synth line in this reminded me of Dead Prez, so I switched the vocals, aaaaand here you go-

Emmett live on CJSW 90.9

Last weekend I was invited down to the CJSW studios to play a set on Mike Zajko’s Sound Champion Showcase…

I brought my laptop and laid down a fun little Ableton set of rap, house, and techno, with lots of edits.

Chicken harassment

Blueprint for a great low-budget music video: cute blonde + slow-mo + good editing + something weird.

Oh yeah, and a good song helps. This is Thunderheist - “Jerk It”. The video was actually done as part of a contest.
