Quick Edits for the Club

I banged these out on Ableton right after getting home from BC…both are tracks that I love to play out, but the structure of the song makes it tough. 2 extended edits, with some new beats and effects.

Soundwave 08 recap

I just got back from Vancouver Island, where I’ll be moving at the end of August. The place is amazing, it’s a totally worthwhile trip to make without leaving the country (although it kinda feels like you did).

The Island (specifically Victoria) has an impressive music scene, and I ran into a lot of local DJ’s and producers at Soundwave, where house and techno dominated the stages. The Danksoul crew (spread across Western Canada) were there in full force, and managed to impress me both with their music and their alcohol tolerance.

The party is spread across 5 stages, where live artists and DJ’s share the timeslots. Standout acts for me were Tigerskin (live), Nino Moschella (live band on Ubiquity), Marc Schneider (DJ), Longwalkshortdock (live), and Neighbour & Trever (dj/live).

Very mature-sounding music, for the most part, and the satisfied crowd didn’t get out-of-control-rowdy (despite the 4+ bars and intoxication everywhere). I could have honestly stayed there a few more days.

Soundwave 2008 + new track

Next week will be my first time at the Soundwave Music Festival, on a beach at the west end of Vancouver Island. The festival was never really on my radar screen until this year, but a slew of Albertans are making the trip this time around.

The lineup is pretty eclectic but has a ton of solid west coast and international acts on it….Dirt Crew, Brett Johnson, Marcus Intalex, Rithma, Hipp-E, Jacob London, T Power, Matthew Jonson, and many more. Go check the website for the full list.

I’ll be lugging around copies of a new promo disc as well, which will have remastered and freshly edited versions of stuff I’ve been posting on the blog… including this freestle joint I cooked up on the weekend.

M83 vs. Style Of Eye - The Midnight Kazoo

I mostly edited this track together from Style Of Eye’s “The Big Kazoo” and Jackson’s remix of M83’s “Run Into Flowers”.

After the huge ominous breakdown, Jackson’s chopped-up synths and percussion take over. I can picture this really going off at the right time.

In the wilderness

Being stuck in my quaint little hometown with no TV, phone, or internet (I’m in a starbucks), the next logical step was to make a little reggaeton/disco jam. Summer will pass you by, unless you sit outside in the sun and listen to stuff like this.

Panorama Bar x Laurent Garnier

Since returning home from Germany, one of the things I miss having nearby is Berghain/Panorama Bar. One of my favourite nights out there was February 29, when Laurent Garnier played all night on the upstairs half.

Garnier was also feeling inspired, as he’s put out his first 12″ single in 5 years, with one track named “Panoramix” named in honour of that evening. Click the video window to read the whole story (it’s a montage of pictures in & around the club).

Speaking of Panorama Bar, I found another youtube clip profiling their bouncer, the scariest person I’ve ever had to walk by, who moonlights as a photographer. Never heard the guy talk before, kinda funny.

hooooly slacking

Okay, that was a while since the last blog post. Lots of stuff happened in the meantime…

I toured around Europe (Prague, Rome, Florence). All great cities, but my heart still belongs to Berlin. I’ll post a couple choice pictures in a minute.

The party w/ Brett Johnson was a success, I had a blast, and lots of friends showed up to say hi.

For music, I’ve been downloading mixes from the Eh Team blog, brought to you by a handful of Canada’s best DJs. Bookmark that shit.

My favourite remix so far

Download: Crime Mob - Stilettos (Emmett remix)

Vaugely inspired by Sebastien Tellier’s new album, Sexuality.

Jamie Lidell

I caught Jamie Lidell at the Admiralspalast here in Berlin on Saturday, and it was quite an experience. I’ve seen some Youtube clips of his previous live shows, which he did with a laptop rig and a microphone, but this time he brought a full band along to do about half the songs with him. There’s a slapstick comedy element to it, as he is obviously playing around with the music, the band, and the audience. Catch him on tour this summer if you can.

Here’s a video I took of his loopy beatbox version of “A Little Bit More”:

And “Figured Me Out” with the full band this time:

That one is my favourite track off the new album Jim, which you should go pick up at your favourite music shop.

Gwan test mi ableton mashup!

Just put this together, with the alternate soundclash vocal…you probably haven’t heard this one.
